Tomorrow (Wednesday 23rd May) Commonwealth Marathon Champion, John Kelai will cheer on pupils from Newmarket as they run two kilometres at Newmarket Race Course.
Now in its eighth year, the Tesco Great School Run, organised by those behind the iconic Great North Run and Tesco, encourages children and their parents to get fit and healthy through exercise and healthy eating.
Natasha Danvers said: “Today is all about getting the children engaged in exercise, talking about healthy eating and having fun along the way.
“The Tesco Great School Run is a great way to get children active. It’s fantastic to be involved and to see so many children from the area getting so excited ahead of the run.”
Chris Jones, CEO at England Athletics, said: “During 2012 the importance of taking athletics to young people up and down the country is an important part of ensuring a lasting participation legacy.”
Councillor Kathy Gosling, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for sport, culture, health, wellbeing and diversity, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many people getting fit and active by taking part in these fun runs and it’s also a fantastic way to celebrate the London 2012 Games.”
Schools can organise their own run by registering by Friday 25 May 2012 at www.greatschoolrun.org. Schools that register will receive a teachers' pack through the post containing race numbers, a poster and a teachers’ guide. Schools that complete the Tesco Great School Run will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win sports equipment and kit or VIP Great North Run and Junior Great Run experiences.
